Most first-time founders make the same mistake: they skip the prototype and go straight to asking a Chinese factory for a “sample.” It sounds reasonable. You want to see the product before you commit to a bulk order. But sample and prototype are not the same thing — and confusing them is an expensive lesson.
What a Prototype Is
A prototype is a rough, functional version of your idea. It’s not meant to be pretty — it’s meant to work well enough to test your concept.

- Dimensions and materials may differ from the final product

What a Sample Is
A sample is a near-finished product made with actual production tooling. It reflects the real materials, real dimensions, and real packaging of your final product.

The Right Order of Operations
Follow this sequence. Skipping steps is where cost and time blow up.
- Submit your product description or concept to a sourcing contact. Include dimensions, function, and materials if you know them — don’t worry if you don’t.
- Get a spec sheet built before approaching any factory. Without one, factories guess — and guesses cost you iteration rounds.
- Request a prototype first. Explicitly tell the factory “prototype only, not sample.” Some factories conflate the two.
- Test everything that matters — function, fit, feel. Not finish. Finish comes later.
- Iterate if needed. Two to three rounds is normal. Don’t panic — this is the process.
- Approve the prototype, then request a sample. Now the factory uses production tooling. This is what you sign off on before bulk.
- Do a third-party QC inspection on the sample before approving mass production. Non-negotiable for larger orders.
